{"id":1285,"date":"2018-05-10T00:41:08","date_gmt":"2018-05-10T00:41:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/agrifood.swim.net.au\/news\/mandatory-labelling-for-lupin-starts-on-26th-may-2018\/"},"modified":"2018-05-10T00:41:08","modified_gmt":"2018-05-10T00:41:08","slug":"mandatory-labelling-for-lupin-starts-on-26th-may-2018","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/agrifood.swim.net.au\/fr\/news\/mandatory-labelling-for-lupin-starts-on-26th-may-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Mandatory labelling for Lupin &#8211; starts on 26th May 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A reminder that if you are a Food buisness &#8211; that mandatory allergen labelling requirements for <em><strong>Lupin<\/strong><\/em> begins on 26 May 2018.<\/p>\n<p><em>FSANZ CEO Mark Booth said lupin is a legume which belongs to the same plant family as peanuts, and has the potential to be an allergen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIn Australia, lupin has not typically been used in food, however, due to its high protein and fibre content we are seeing an increase in its use,\u201d Mr Booth said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIn 2017, lupin was added to the list of allergens that must be declared on food labels. Food businesses were given 12 months to meet these requirements.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAny foods that contain lupin must declare it on the label from 26 May 2018 \u2013 even if it\u2019s already on the shelf.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cCorrect allergen labelling can mean the difference between life and death for people with food allergies so it is vital that food businesses get it right.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cEven if the food is not in a package (for example, food prepared at and sold&nbsp;from a takeaway shop), allergen information must be displayed in connection with the food or provided to the purchaser if requested,\u201d Mr Booth said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!-- x-tinymce\/html --><span lang=\"EN-US\">Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is a statutory authority in the Australian Government Health portfolio.
